Diagrams shown in the book are made with B. The head of the M. All the researched information would suggest the Model 12’s introduction date to be at some point during or early , and it is presumably coincidence that the model number and date seem the same. In the third edition of Lt. Robinson’s book of , he states that the best rifle is undoubtedly the No. However, in the first edition, he had used exactly the same wording, making the same claim, for the “Greener” understood to mean the Greener “Miniature Club”.
The Greener rifle’s barrel detachment was then achieved by pressing and rotating a thumb lever which slackened the barrel thread, clamped by virtue of a slot machined in the underside of the action body; after which the barrel could be unscrewed. Nice looking rifle and I suspect its very accurate. A couple of observations. The M70 target model was cataloged in a variety of chamberings from ‘ ’52, then mysteriously dropped from the ‘ ’54 catalogs. When reinstated in ’55 it was only cataloged in and WIN. Now here’s the thing M70 medium heavy target barrels prior to ’53 had a dovetail at the muzzle end for attaching a front sight block. The two tapped holes came along with the reintroduction target rifle and introduction of the WIN chambering in ‘ Given that your rifle is a gun, it is possible???
Since the rifle clearly has a M70 SWIFT target barrel on it, and by the ’50s Winchester was requiring that barrels be replaced at the factory, it is also possible that the barrel was replaced by Winchester??? Like Steve, I’d be curious about whether there is a date stamped under the chamber, as that would clear up a lot. If it tapers toward the muzzle, then it was reshaped when it was refinished. I could certainly see someone doing that with a rifle they used in the field, as it might be more handy than the full beavertail fore end.
Then again, it might just be the camera lens that’s fooling me. The second picture looks fine while the ninth picture looks like the fore end tapers???
